Nick Verreos at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC!

A Night of Fashion with Nick!
Purple Rains Into DC: Nick Verreos at the Corcoran stage

This last week, I flew to the US Capital, Washington DC. No, not to dress Michelle Obama (I'm still hoping) and no, not to meet with the Salahi's over tea and curry (and how to find the right lengha choli with dupatta ensemble for the next Indian Prime Minister State Dinner).Theater Diva: Nick Verreos at the Corcoran stage

I was invited by the prestigious Corcoran Gallery and College of Art and Design to give a lecture on fashion and how I got into fashion--as well as show the best of up-and-coming West Coast fashion from my alma mater (and school in which I am an instructor), the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM.No You Didn't Moment: Nick Verreos at the Corcoran, Washington DC Lecture

The last time I was in DC was when I was invited to host the California State Society's Inaugural Luncheon and Fashion Show at the fabulous Ritz Carlton in January. I was excited--and honored to return--this time to be part of the Corcoran's "Fashion Program". Before the event, I joked with my hosts telling them that I hoped that more than two people show up (wink wink!). Boy, they did! I was very happy to see the Corcoran theater packed as I made my way out. For about 30 minutes, I talked about how my love of fashion began, my early days in Venezuela, being inspired by Pan Am flight attendants and my mom in her chiffon caftans and bouffant J.Lo hairdos. Designer and Muse: Nick Verreos on stage at the Corcoran with NIKOLAKI-clad model projected behind him

I then presented a video of the 2009 FIDM Debut Fashion Show, showing the graduates of the Advanced Fashion Design Program and their first collections (which I helped mentor). There was a brief Q & A in which I confessed how I really did not enjoy the make-a-dress-out-of-plants challenge in my season of Project Runway and my distaste for men who love "clipping" their cell phones/Blackberry's on their waistbands.
Nick Buffet: An Hors D'oeuvres table at the Nick Verreos Corcoran Lecture and Reception

Directly following the Lecture and fashion show video, guests were treated to a wine-and-cheese reception at the Corcoran Gallery plus a special viewing of the NIKOLAKI gowns I brought all the way from Los Angeles (PS: Virgin America really needs to get a hanging closet!).
Gown Trio: Nikolaki by Nick Verreos and David Paul gowns at the Corcoran

While everyone was enjoying the hors d'oeuvres, I was busy at my "Meet-and-Greet" table, signing autographs and taking photos with over 100 guests. Would You Like A Photo: Nick Verreos signing autographs, Corcoran Gallery DC

I was happy to say "hello" to all my DC fashionistas and was especially excited to meet the one attendee who actually brought her "Project Runway Barbie" (designed by moi) in that fateful Project Runway "All Dolled Up" Barbie Challenge. As you can see from the photo below, I was DYING!!! It was a fabulous event and yes, I was happy to see that more than two people showed up to hear little ol' me. That's Going On Ebay: Nick Verreos holds up his "My Scene Barbie" that a guest brought in for an autograph

I love Washington DC (hello, I'm the son of a former US State Department Foreign Officer!) and cannot wait to return. A "little birdie" told me that my Lecture and appearance was such a success, that there could be a chance for a return visit. I can't wait to come back to my dad's former "stomping grounds". Dupont Circle and Georgetown, I am so there!

Nick Verreos Hosts FIDM San Diego Debut Fashion Show!

Uncle Nicky Goes Traveling, Part One: The San Diego Edition
Runway Struttin': Nick Verreos at the San Diego Debut Fashion Show

This last weekend was a busy one: I was invited to host a great fashion show in San Diego sponsored by that city's Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising Campus on Saturday afternoon and the next day, I was scheduled to be in Seattle for a big photo shoot for a new campaign I am doing with MSN and their new Victory Project. Time to "Make it Work", as Tim Gunn would say. The Debut Fashion Show--a yearly runway show highlighting the final collections of the top graduates of FIDM's Advanced Fashion Design Program--goes "on the road" each year to several of the FIDM campuses. And this time, it was sunny San Diego!
Model Love: Nick Verreos gets hugs from Mercedes, Lisa and Tanisha

Years ago, I was actually one of those fashion design graduates in FIDM's Advanced Fashion Design Program and now, I am actually one of the instructors in this exclusive program. You may remember (if you've been keeping up on my blog) that these were also the graduates who got to design for Barbie (yeah!)
Gown Happy: Model in Clay Sadler's gown, FIDM San Diego Debut fashion show

The site of the fashion show was the Westin Horton Plaza right in the Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego. The show featured the designs of FIDM graduates Charles Ryan Sands, Clay Sadler, San Diego native Sara Lighthall, Mike Cheng, Adrian Manuel, Liz Sandhoefner, Brenda Ahamad, Lacey Osberg, Valentina Vardanyan, Johnathan Webster and Natalie Hara. Untied: Models wearing Sara Lighthall's designs on the runway, FIDM San Diego Debut fashion show

Several of them have already done very well: Adrian is working with Single, Charles Ryan interned at Chado Ralph Rucci for his most recent NY Fashion Week Collection, Natalie launched her own company, Natalia Romano and several of them are in Italy as we speak, studying at an exclusive Haute Couture fashion design school.
Muse Mercedes: Modeling at the FIDM San Diego Debut Show (left), and modeling for Nikolaki (right)

A special treat for this San Diego show was seeing lots of my favorite models--including one of my first "Model Muses", the gorgeous Mercedes. She was one of the very first models we ever used when we launched NIKOLAKI back in 2001 and we have remained friends ever since. Lisa Blades models FIDM Debut graduate Valentina Vardanyan's creation

Also on hand was Lisa Blades, whom you might recognize from Lifetime Networks Models Of the Runway show, as well as Tanisha Harper. Both of them are finalists in the show and got a chance to model at Bryant Park (so excited for them!). Jonathan models Charles Ryan Sands' screen printed jeans, coat and scarf, FIDM San Diego Debut fashion show

To the delight of the young audience, there were also lots of male models strutting down the San Diego runway, including Jonathan , the runner-up from Bravo's "Make Me A Supermodel". He is THE SWEETEST guy! Love him!
HIIIIIIIII Everyone! Nick Verreos and the line at the Westin Horton Plaza Ballroom

After the show was over, I told the audience that I would be happy to take photos and sign anything! Well, little did I know that hundreds of high school students (their mommies and daddies too!) would be waiting for me in the lobby. I think even some of them got some photos with the models as well which I am sure will end up on Facebook. Get ready to be tagged!
Cheeky Kisses: Nick Verreos and his "fans", San Diego FIDM Debut Show

It was a wonderful afternoon of fashion and models. Maybe there were some future FIDM Debut 2014 Graduates in the audience. Who knows? Thanks for a great time San Diego! Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go catch a plane to Seattle! Where's my trench coat when I really need it?

Nick Verreos Takes on Style Week Orange County--and LOVED IT!!!

Behind the Orange (Fashion) Curtain!
Double Breasted in Orange County: Nick Verreos at the Style Week OC Active Ride After Party

If you've been keeping up with my lovely blog here, you may remember that last Monday, I went down to the Irvine Spectrum Center in Orange County to shoot a TV segment for "Good Day LA", Southern California's most watched morning news/talk show. The reason: To promote Style Week Orange County and the fashions that would be shown this year. Well, three days later I was BACK!
The weather was absolutely GORGEOUS as David and I made our way to Orange County and checked in to our OUT OF CONTROL home for the next few days, the Pelican Hill Resort (more on that in another post!). We got ready and headed to the Irvine Spectrum to check out the fashion shows. I was "blown away" by how fabulous everything was--from the modern and chic stark white runway stage to the stunning models hand-picked from LA's top modeling agency LA Models to the sectioned off area for red carpet and VIP guests. It was like Smashbox/Mercedes Benz LA Fashion Week but outdoors under a balmy evening breeze and 75 degree weather. In other words: It was better!
The Greek-Venezuelan Michael Kors: Nick Verreos judges the Needle and Thread Competition, Style Week Orage County

The evening began with the SOLD OUT (!) Designer Showcase Fashion Show and the Needle and Thread Competition, a contest sponsored by Ezekiel and Active Ride Shop. Six fashion school grads--who just happened to be ALL from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, my alma mater (Go FIDM!)--were chosen to design looks inspired by the Ezekiel Spring 2010 Collection. Mentor Nick: Nick Verreos flanked by Needle and Thread Contestants Liz Sandhoefner, Brenda Ahamad, Valentina Vardanyan, and Adrian Manuel

By coincidence, it happened to be that 5 out of 6 designers were former students of mine, so it goes without saying that even though I was "officially" there as a judge, I still felt like a "proud poppa". All six did amazingly well! They created designs that were "spot on" in following the Ezekiel brand but at the same time, injected their own design "DNA" into each garment. And The Winner Is: Nick Verreos announces the winner (and Second Place) of Needle and Thread Competition

It was a tough decision but we ended up choosing the talented 21 year old San Jose native (now residing in LA) Adrian Manuel as the winner. When his designs came down the runway, my fellow judges (all female) were emitting "oohs" and "aahs". Of all the 6 "contestants", he really nailed it! Therefore, we awarded him with the $4,000 (I know, shut up!) Top Prize. Second Place went to Liz Sandhoefner (who was a Debut FIDM 2009 Grad, along with Adrian). She received a $2,000 second place prize. As I announced them as the winners I think I saw tears come down their ecstatic faces. Yes, I was clutching my pearls for them!
Can You Spell Your Name? Meeting and Greeting at Irvine Spectrum Active Ride Shop After Party

Following the Needle and Thread Competition and Fashion Show, I was whisked off (by security guards no less--who am I Miley Cyrus?) to the After Party at the Irvine Spectrum's Active Ride Shop, where guests drank Champagne and mingled with all the designers. One...Singular Sensation:Nick Verreos and fans do their best Chorus Line Pose

I was also there to do a meet-and-greet with all the fashion show guests. I was humbled to see a long line of fans and fashion show guests alike (I'm just happy if two people show up!) and proceeded to sign and take lots of photos.
Miss Iraq: Nick Verreos poses with Iraq-born designer Oday Shakar and his models

Afterward, as I made my way back to my awaiting town car (yes, the clients got me limo! Love them!), I spotted a stunning six-foot tall model in a black gown so you just know I had to approach her. As it turned out it was a model, the Nigerian-born Tracy Acholonu, along with one of the Style Week OC featured designers, Oday Shakar (I missed his show because of the autograph signing). Of course, she was wearing one of his designs, along with a couple of other models. I might have missed his show but I got the "VIP Viewing" up close and personal--and it was all COUTURE!!
Next Up: My Macy's Appearance at the Irvine Spectrum....but first, I had to get a good night's rest at the fabulous Pelican Hill Resort...Toodles!

Resort 2010 Trend Alert: The High Waisted, Cropped Pant

You Slouch! The Latest Pant: Paperbag Cropped Trousers, Marc Jacobs Resort 2010

Slouchy, loose-yet-fitted, pleated and pegged...these are all the buzz words for Resort 2010. And since the Resort Collections are just an overture to what you will see for Spring/Summer, then this is just the beginning of a major trend alert! These Pants look AMAZING...on a 6'2" size 2 model: Proenza Schouler Resort 2010

Designers, from Marc Jacobs to Proenza Schouler to Lanvin's Alber Elbaz, are still in a major 1980's "moment" and these pants are indicative of this. Since I am a child of the 80's, I unfortunately remember these. I would venture to guess that most of the Design Assistants at these firms, weren't even born in the 1980s (God I feel old!) and think these are just so "new and fresh". When I see these, all I can think of is Dexy's Midnight Runners and their 1982 "Come On Eileen" video. Matthew Williamson Resort 2010

As I began looking at all the Resort Collection photos, I noticed these pant styles kept popping up. What first came to mind was can a "real girl" wear these? The silhouette alone seems to be unflattering to just about EVERY OTHER GIRL---except the 5'11", 112 lb, size 2 model wearing them! They emphasize your hips and cut off your legs at a rather unflattering line. But to heck with that. Fashion doesn't have to be for everybody.Cropped Graduate: A design from FIDM Debut '09 graduate, Adrian Manuel

These pants are fabulous and chic-- if you are a size 0-4 fashionista girl, a junior Vogue editor fresh out of NYU or a young, tall and thin Hollywood starlet or singer. And I must admit, I thought they were cute enough for one of my FIDM Advanced Fashion Design students to show them for their Debut 2009 Collection earlier this year.
Phillip Lim 3.1 Resort 2010

I'll be really curious to see how much this trend takes effect and how soon Forever 21 knocks it off! I'm sure you could already find a pair at H & M. The one thing this trend might be really good for is the Shoe Industry. Whereas the trend before was to cover the shoe with floor-grazing jeans and trousers, now we are exposing them with these new cropped and pegged high-waisted baggy pants. And just when you think that it's only the females who are being burdened with this trend: Think again. The latest Paris and Milan Menswear Collections also showed cropped , pegged and (I am about to scream!) PLEATED pants!!!!

Nick Verreos attends the Natalia Romano Launch Party

A Former Student Makes "Papa Nick" Proud!
Khaki and Turquoise: Nick Verreos and designer Natalie Hara at her Natalia Romano Launch Party

Last week I attended the launch party of Natalia Romano, a new womenswear line designed by Natalie Hara, a recent graduate of FIDM. I was especially excited to attend this party since Natalie was actually one of my students in the Advanced Fashion Design Major. She showed her FIDM Debut 2009 Collection in February at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar. And now, in just four months, she has designed a complete new collection post-school and moved into a great new space in the Downtown LA Garment District, located on the 6Th floor of the LA Apparel Mart Building. I was teaching until about 9 PM so I arrived "fashionably late". The party was in full swing, with delicious hors d'oeuvres, a Vodka Open Bar and even a cute DJ, spinning tunes for all the guests to enjoy. FIDM Debut Reunion: Former classmates of Natalie Hara, celebrating in her Natalia Romano Launch Party

Lots of her friends, including her fellow FIDM Debut '09 students, were there to offer their congratulations. Natalie's most gracious family were all there as well--including her DIVA grandmother who was the definition of charm and class.Fashion Party: Nick Verreos, designer Natalie Hara of Natalia Romano and Amanda Luttrell Garrigus

Fashion Personality, Amanda Luttrell Garrigus, stopped by to also view the line. Amanda is one of the most stylish women in LA, so if she's there, you now this must be good! I asked Natalie to show me the new line. In two words: Casual Chic. And very wearable and elegant, as well. It was a complete--and very fresh--departure from what she did at school for her Debut Year, which were very attention-getting gowns.
Golds, beiges, metallics and mustard yellows: The Natalia Romano Line

These were real clothes for a real, albeit very stylish woman, young or old. These were clothes I could see at Intermix, Scoop or Barney's CoOp. I am a "Gown Guy" but Natalie won me over with her separates. My favorites included her metallic tops, printed shorts and pencil skirts in heavy upholstery-like fabric, and some very-now "Harem" pants that were pleated and full up top and narrow at the bottom. PYT's: Nick Verreos, flanked by chic guests at the Natalia Romano Launch Party, Downtown LA

Of course, the Natalia Romano collection had some festive dresses perfectly made for all the Young Hollywood set who venture to Hyde , Chateau Marmont and Les Deux. In fact, the designer herself was dressed in one her own designs, a turquoise satin off-the-shoulder Sari-inspired dress, which could stop Hollywood traffic! Congratulations Natalie on a great launch party. I wish you much success! Hope to see it in stores and on lots of those beautiful Hollywood "It" girls real soon!

FIDM Debut Judging Night with Nick Verreos

Speed Judging... FIDM Debut 2009 Style!Judges Ready? NIKOLAKI designer, David Paul, Swarovski West Coast Showroom Manager, the stylish Lisa Beckenholdt-Owers, Solstiss Executive Jane Burge (in her own design!), Nick Verreos and jewelry designer Tori Hartman

Earlier in the week, the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising/FIDM held their annual Debut 2009 Judging Night at their Downtown Los Angeles Campus. The annual Debut Judging night occurs a couple of weeks after the 11 students of the Advanced Fashion Design Program showed their collections at the Santa Monica Barker Hangar in the Debut 2009 Fashion Show to a 3000 plus crowd. The Judging Night is done in a form similar to "speed dating" in which a group of judges sit in while the student designer presents their collection to them in only 7 minutes. This is done until all the judges have "sat in" on every designer, which usually takes over an hour. As one of the Debut 2009 Instructors/Mentors, I just made sure that every things ran (somewhat) smoothly and that the kids were prepared and that their collections, portfolios and resumes were on the mark.
Street Style: Fashion Illustrator extraordinaire Angelo Estrada (giving you Run DMC!), Nick Verreos (sporting Philip Lim and Marc Jacobs Collection) and designer Raymundo Baltazar (in sunglasses and stripes)

This year, approximately 30 industry professionals showed up at the the fabulous FIDM Museum and Gallery which currently houses the 17Th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design ( featuring costumes from 2008's best films, including the Academy Award winning "Elizabeth: The Golden Age") for this year's Debut 2009 Judging Night. Some of the judges included Hollywood red carpet and QVC designer and author Bradley Bayou, FIDM graduate Patricia Nevil of L'ezu Atelier of Beverly Hills, celebrity stylist Niki Shadrow and Jewelry Designer Tori Hartman.

Also in attendance were Fashion Illustrator and designer (and current Hip-Hop Diva) Angelo Estrada, Swarovski West Coast executive, Lisa Beckenholdt-Owers, Solstiss (Couture Fabrics from France) Executive Jane Burge, and even my Project Runway Season 2 buddy, designer Raymundo Baltazar. They sampled delicious hors d'oeuvres of dumplings, pizza and spinach dip as they waited to judge. A well-fed judge makes for better judging.
Most Creative: Charles Ryan Sands stands by his winning collection

After the judging had been completed, prizes were handed out in three categories: Most Creative Collection went to Charles Ryan Sands for his gas mask-printed (you read right!) pants, hooded cowl-draped hooded men's and women's jerseys and intricately tailored leathers and suitings. Most Cohesive: Lacey Osberg strikes a pose by her collection

The Most Cohesive Collection prize-- in terms of use of styling, color and fabrics--went to Lacey Osberg, designer of Lacey Elizabeth, for her elegantly tailored and feminine pieces ideal for the Upper East Side socialite who likes to have a little bit of romantic fun with her wardrobe. Most Marketable: Liz Sandhefner poses with one of her over sized collar printed denim coats

Finally, the Most Marketable honor went to Liz Sandhoefner, who designed a very sellable printed-and-solid denim collection of jumpsuits, jumpers, separates and fitted dresses, perfect for the less expensive Junior Market. Congratulations to all the Debut 2009 Designers and of course, especially to the three winners. Now, go out there and get a job...and make "Instructor Nick" proud!

Nick Verreos' Malibu Barbie--Part Two--Behind The Scenes

Pink, Pink, and More Pink!!!!Chantal "Barbie" with her Escorts: Designers Nick Verreos and David Paul, pose with their Barbie creation

Of course I couldn't just write about Barbie and the FIDM Debut 2009 in just one post so here's Part Deux. I have to say that it was such a wonderful experience working with Mattel on this collaboration and then bringing it to my Advanced Fashion Design students at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising and seeing what they would do with the fashion icon that is Barbie.Prom Photo 2009: Model Chantal Jones and Nick Verreos

Most of the eleven students were ready for the challenge but some of the students were hesitant, I cannot lie. Especially some of the male student designers. There was this "my design aesthetic is a hard-edge power woman in black skinny pants and black leather jackets...I'm not into designing feminine pink things..." Well, get over it. Your client is Barbie and you gotta, as Tim Gunn famously (repeat after me) said "Make it Work!" And they did.Nick Plays With Dolls: Nick Verreos poses with "Barbie of the Ascot Races", "Hamptons Barbie" and "Malibu Dream Gown Barbie"

We decided to give each student designer a month out of Barbie's busy year-long international traveling schedule and they were to design for that month--with a specific theme in mind. For example, one student got the month of June and "Barbie Goes to the Ascot Races"; another one got July and "Barbie Goes to The Hamptons" ; for August, Barbie was "Sunning In St. Tropez "; for October, Barbie was the guest of honor at the "Save Venice Masked Ball"; for the month of December, Barbie "Goes to Aspen to Ski". Where's The Queen of England: "Ascot Barbie" designed by FIDM student designer Lacey Osberg

I got the month of March and Barbie's Birthday at her Malibu Mansion, of course, which is where she would return after all her year-long travels and "special appearances". After twelve months of travel, you would think Barbie would just want to end up at fabulous Spa Retreat in Beverly Hills! Maybe next time! For her "Special Birthday" year Barbie hosted her celebration in a Nick Verreos Couture Gown!Sea and Ski: "Aspen Barbie" by Charles Ryan Sands and "Cruise Ship Barbie" by Sara Lighthall

The results were fantastic , as seen here in these photos , as well as in the runway video from the previous post (in case you didn't get to see it, click HERE). The show was so well received, some guests called it the "Best FIDM Debut 2009 they had seen in years...". Ready For Her Close-Up: Nick's Malibu Barbie seconds before her runway debut

After months and months of planing, sketching, designing, draping, pattern making, it all came to fruition in a 15 minute show! The models, well, they all became life-sized Barbies and kept up the energy, even after the two-hour long show (and trust me, after doing 2 TWO HOUR FASHION SHOWS each evening, these beauties were spent!). Heather From Season 2 Project Runway: Heather Brown (far right) and two lifesize Barbies

It was a special treat for me to see model Heather Brown--one of the models from Project Runway Season 2--who modeled in the Barbie show. She brought to life "Barbie Goes South of the Border, to San Miguel de Allende" . Dressing Gals: The AMAZING "Barbie" dressers pose with "Uncle Nick" backstage

Everyone backstage was so wonderful and accommodating. All the dressers--students from FIDM--were unbelievably helpful. The make-up artists and the hairstylists did an amazing job with all their life-sized Barbies, bringing everyone's hairstyle sketches to life. From the traditional pony-tail and bangs to my "Can you mimic the bow on my gown..but on her hair?" request, the stylists "brought it"! Nick Verreos and actress Allie Grant from "Weeds", pose on the FIDM Debut 2009 "Pink Carpet"

I was very excited to see 15 year old actress Allie Grant, from Showtime's "Weeds", who was one of my "special guests" at the "Debut Barbie Gala". And at each event, I even had my own "bodyguard"! Everywhere I went, I had a "Shadow" and his name was Rick. All the models and my students were making fun of me and found it quite amusing, to say the least.Who Am I? Whitney Houston: Nick Verreos with his bodyguard, Rick

Now, why should I need security, you may ask? Well, a couple of years ago when I told all the 3000 guests of a Debut Show that I would be "available for photos", I began posing with people and a stampede of 500 kids and their parents came charging in, pushing me to the floor, and what ensued was a minor version of "American Idol"-esque mayhem. Kids screaming and mothers shouting at me, mad because I was not taking photos with them. And I was ALONE, with no one to help me! Needless to say, the following year, I got my "bodyguard", just in case.... Every five minutes I tried to embarrass Rick by telling him I felt like Whitney Houston in "The Bodyguad". He smiled.
Nick and his Escorts: Nick Verreos poses with Barbie's male model escorts

All in all, I had a ball with all the kids this time, taking as many Facebook and MySpace photos as I could and even giving them impromptu "red carpet fashion commentary". I should have just called Lisa Rinna and set up two chairs by the entrance and began our own new "FIDM Debut/Barbie Fashion Wrap with Lisa and Nick"!
